News and Events

NEW - Online Event Registration
We have recently added a new feature to our online services - online registration for library events. From our home page click on the "Calendar" link to view a monthly schedule of events. Click on any event to open a pop-up box that lists event details and includes a register button for those programs that have registration. Complete the form and click the "Send" button to complete the process. It is always helpful for you to include an email address but it is not required. Please note that children's programs are limited to Merrimack Public Library cardholders. If you have any questions or need help with this new service, please call us at 424-5021.
We also now offer online Museum Pass reservations. From our homepage, click on the "Museum Pass" link. This will take you to a page listing all our museum passes and showing which ones are available on the day you would like to use it. You can search by date up to three months ahead or search by specific museum. From this page you can also get details about each pass or connect directly to each museum's Web site. Use your Merrimack Library card and PIN to reserve the pass on the day you choose. We will still take phone reservations for museum passes but will not accept email requests. As always, if you have any questions, please call the library at 424-5021 for help.

12/3 @ 7 pm - Nutcracker Lecture & Recital
Classical composer and pianist Alfred Watson returns to the Merrimack Public Library to present a recital and lecture featuring music from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. This is Watson's fourth visit to Merrimack and anyone who has ever heard the music or seen the ballet performed will enjoy learning the true story behind the Nutcracker and what was in the mind of the composer. Watson performs selections from the music, tells stories of each scene, and provides interesting commentary about how the ballet was created along with insights about Tchaikovsky.
Alfred Watson is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in New York and has performed on many radio stations and in recitals in the US. His performance has been generously co-sponsored by the Friends of the Merrimack Public Library.
This program is free and open adults and children age 8 and older. Seating is limited so registration is recommended. Now you can register yourself online, by email or by calling 424-5021.

Visit Alfred Watson's website.

Quilt Raffle to benefit the Development Fund
A small group of library supporters have donated a new quilt to be raffled off to benefit the Library Development Fund. The quilt measures approximately 5'x6' - slightly bigger than a lap quilt. It features a striking contrast of brightly colored squares set against solid black fabric and is machine quilted in a variegated thread which adds to the stunning impact of color on black. Raffle tickets prices are $1 each, 6 for $5 or 15 for $10 and are being sold at the Circulation Desk. The proceeds of the raffle will go to the Library Development Fund, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to raise money for equipment and furnishings for the new library.. The final drawing will be held at the library's Annual Holiday Tea on Tuesday, December 8.

Exhibits Sought
The Library is looking for attractive items to exhibit in its locked display case. Collectibles, historical items, photos and small art objects and crafts are examples of some recent displays that library patrons have enjoyed viewing. Only non-profit displays can be accepted. If you would like to share your treasures for a month, please call the Reference Department at (603) 424-5021 or email.

Compiling the 16th Edition of Community Contacts
The Reference Staff has begun compiling its 16th annual Community Contacts Directory of non-profit groups and organizations in and around Merrimack. The directory includes high-demand information on local non-profits all in one place. The directory will be published in December with information that includes address, contact person, meeting dates, times and locations, and a brief description of each organization. Print copies are available at the library and town hall and all the information is available online at www.merrimack.lib.nh.us/contacts/index.shtml. More than a hundred organizations have been included in past editions and new listings are being sought for the 16th edition. If your non-profit organization would like to be added to this popular publication, you can request a form by contacting Ellen Knowlton in the Reference Department by phone at 424-5021 or by email by October 23, 2009

Help Save Money by Adding Email to Your Library Account
The Library staff is making a concerted effort to cut back on the expense of mailing overdue notices. Toward this purpose, we are encouraging all our patrons to add their email address to their library account information. This will enable us to send overdue notices via email, thereby saving the cost of paper notices, mailing envelopes and postage! Our new system also includes the feature of an email notification for items that are coming due, so that patrons get advanced notice and can call to renew.
It's easy to add your email. Just call the Circulation Desk staff at 424-5021 and once you give them your library card number, they can add your email address. Please be reassured that the information on your library account is private. Your email address will not be used for any purpose other than those directly related to items checked out on your card. The library maintains other email lists to notify patrons of upcoming events and to give out library news from the Trustees. Scroll down this page to the next two entries to read more about these other lists and how you can sign up to participate in them.

Trustees Create a Database of Supporters
In order to better identify and communicate with the those citizens who strongly support the library, the Merrimack Public Library Board of Trustees has begun collecting email addresses to create a database of supporters. Every month or two these supporters will be sent an email with updated information about a new building or other pertinent library news. This list will be completely separate from library card account information and from the Adult Program Notification list. If you are interested in participating, email the Trustees and include your name, address and phone number.

Email Notification about Programs Now Available!
The Merrimack Public Library now offers its patrons personal notification about upcoming programs for adults. Simply submit your email address to Ellen Knowlton with the subject line "Program Notification". You will be sent an email two weeks prior to the event, and you may reserve a seat by replying to the email, as long as space remains. If you sign up, please be assured that your email address will never be shared or used by the library for other purposes. What is the Library Blog?
Blog - short for "web log"- is an online journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. The Reference Staff has created its own blog on which it will post all kinds of information regarding library services for adults and teens, collections, programs and other library services. Think you know everything there is to know about the Merrimack Public Library? Think again. Return to our home page and click on the library blog link. You’re welcome to post a moderated comment on any posting and add the blog to your RSS feed.

Wireless Internet Access now available
Wireless internet access is now available at the library. Patrons visiting the library with their own wireless-ready laptop computers can simply boot up their network software and connect to "Library." This is a non-secure connection, so each user is responsible for protecting their own privacy. The service is available on both floors of the library, although signal strength may vary. For more information, contact the Reference Department in person, by phone at 424-5021, or by email

Book Sale
The Library Trustees hold three used books sales each year, one in late January (usually the weekend before the Super Bowl) and one on the first full week-end of June, and one in the first weekend after Labor Day. Each Book Sale runs on Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 1-3 pm. Items for sale will include things recently withdrawn from the library collection as well as items donated by members of the community.
We also have a small "ongoing" Book Sale located on the main floor of the library where you will find a variety of bargain-priced items ranging from children's to adult books along with media. There are always new items to browse through for your reading pleasure.
About Donations
  • Due to our space limitations, donations of books can only be accepted during the 4 weeks prior to the scheduled Book Sale.
  • Children's books, current fiction, and current non-fiction are particularly sought after but video tapes, audio tapes, compact discs, and DVD's will also be accepted.
  • The Library is unable to accept condensed books, text books, National Geographic or other magazines, or books that are mildewed or water damaged.
  • Receipts stating the number of items donated will be provided if requested.
  • It is helpful if large donations are brought in disposable bags or boxes as we don't have room to store and return plastic bins or storage containers.

    Book Drop at Station #2

In the summer of 2005 the library replaced the Book Drop located at the Merrimack Fire Department's Station #2, at 196 Naticook Road. This off-site collection box was first placed at Station #2 more than 10 years earlier to provide residents in the south end of town with a convenient way to return library materials. The bright blue Book Drop box sits to the right of a "Cans for Kids" collection shed and materials are regularly collected from the box by employees and volunteers.
