Kindle Library Books
Finally -- Amazon Kindle eReaders are now compatible with New Hampshire Downloadable Books (NHDB)! Kindle owners can check out Kindle-compatible versions of the eBook titles and download them directly to their Kindles free of charge. The borrowing period is 2 weeks with no renewals, and a maximum of 3 titles can be checked out at a time. Selections are limited to available titles in the NHDB collection, and new titles are added weekly. ePub versions of the books are available for other eReaders. Both Amazon and the NHDB site have help screens to guide new users, and the Reference Librarians may be able to answer questions as well. Contact the Reference Department at 424-5021 or by email at mmkpl@merrimack.lib.nh.us
Changes to Kindle Lending from Penguin
The approximately 870 eBooks in our New Hampshire Downloadable Books collection published by Penguin can no longer be wirelessly transferred to a Kindle device. In order to read the Penguin titles on your Kindle, you will need to download the title to your computer and use the USB cable to transfer the title to your Kindle. Please know that the publisher requested this change, not NHDNB. We apologize for the inconvenience but this is beyond our control.
Merrimack Karate raises funds for the Children's Room
We are thrilled to announce that Rick Giroux and Linda Ryan from Merrimack Karate have designated the Merrimack Library Children’s Room as this year’s recipient of their Annual Student Kick-a-Thon! Students will be collecting pledges through March 31st, and will be doing their kicks during the first week of April. All funds will be collected by April 14th.
In addition to the Karate students collecting pledges, Merrimack Karate has provided information slips and collection boxes at the library's service desks for patrons to participate in the fundraiser. Donate $10 and receive two free weeks of karate classes. Just complete yellow form with your contact information and place it in one of the collection boxes; Merrimack Karate will then contact you privately.
Last year’s Kick-A-Thon raised $3204 for the Kids Kove Rebuild Project. While there is no way to predict how much money will be raised this year, the Children's Room Staff has already started researching how the funds can be used to improve our services.
Changes to State Van Service Impact Sharing between Libraries
Budget reductions at the state level have forced the NH State Library to cut staff which, in turn, will impact the the state's interlibrary van service. Since July 2011, the Merrimack Library receives three weekly deliveries (down from five) and, along with other libraries, ise limited as to the number of items we can send on a van trip. Patrons may be impacted by the length of time it will takes to receive items they have requested from other libraries, including GMILCS member libraries. We are sorry for any inconvenience this creates, but the issue of funding for the state-provided van service is beyond our control.

What are Books To Go?
The Books To Go collection holds extra copies of some of the newest and most popular books -- the ones in high demand. This small collection contains both fiction and non-fiction and can be found on the main level, on top of a bookshelf about halfway between the Circulation Desk and the Reference Desk. Many patrons routinely browse the Books To Go shelf before they go anywhere else in the library. It's a great way to see what's popular and you may find a copy of a book that you have been waiting for. There are some special restrictions to the Books To Go collection. These books are loaned on a "first come-first served" basis. They cannot be reserved, they have a 7-day borrowing limit with no renewals and their daily overdue fine is $.25/day. The shorter than normal borrowing period enables more people to read the "hot" books.
Visit the Books To Go shelf and see what you find. If you're waiting for a popular book, you just might find a copy of it there!

Exhibits Sought
The Library is looking for attractive items to exhibit in its locked display case. Collectibles, historical items, photos and small art objects and crafts are examples of some recent displays that library patrons have enjoyed viewing. Only non-profit displays can be accepted. If you would like to share your treasures for a month, please call the Reference Department at (603) 424-5021 or email.
See photos of past exhibits.
Help Save Money by Adding Email to Your Library Account
The Library staff is making a concerted effort to cut back on the expense of mailing overdue notices. Toward this purpose, we are encouraging all our patrons to add their email address to their library account information. This will enable us to send overdue notices via email, thereby saving the cost of paper notices, mailing envelopes and postage! Our new system also includes the feature of an email notification for items that are coming due, so that patrons get advanced notice and can call to renew.
It's easy to add your email. Just call the Circulation Desk staff at 424-5021 and once you give them your library card number, they can add your email address. Please be reassured that the information on your library account is private. Your email address will not be used for any purpose other than those directly related to items checked out on your card. The library maintains other email lists to notify patrons of upcoming events and to give out library news from the Trustees. Scroll down this page to the next two entries to read more about these other lists and how you can sign up to participate in them.
Trustees Create a Database of Supporters
In order to better identify and communicate with the those citizens who strongly support the library, the Merrimack Public Library Board of Trustees has begun collecting email addresses to create a database of supporters. Every month or two these supporters will be sent an email with updated information about a new building or other pertinent library news. This list will be completely separate from library card account information and from the Adult Program Notification list. If you are interested in participating, email the Trustees and include your name, address and phone number.
Email Notification about Programs Now Available!
The Merrimack Public Library now offers its patrons personal notification about upcoming programs for adults. Simply submit your email address to Ellen Knowlton with the subject line "Program Notification". You will be sent an email two weeks prior to the event, and you may reserve a seat by by clicking on the link provided, as long as space remains. If you sign up for email notification, please be assured that your email address will never be shared or used by the library for other purposes.
What is the Library Blog?
Blog - short for "web log"- is an online journal (or newsletter) that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. The Reference Staff has created its own blog on which it will post all kinds of information regarding library services for adults and teens, collections, programs and other library services. Think you know everything there is to know about the Merrimack Public Library? Think again. Return to our home page and click on the library blog link. You’re welcome to post a moderated comment on any posting and add the blog to your RSS feed.
Book Sale
Next book sale - Saturday, June 2 from 9-3 and Sunday, June 3 from 1-3!
The Library Trustees hold three used books sales each year, one in late January (usually the weekend before the Super Bowl) one on the first full week-end of June, and one on the first weekend after Labor Day. Each Book Sale runs on Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm and on Sunday from 1-3 pm. Items for sale will include things recently withdrawn from the library collection as well as items donated by members of the community. Drop by to see what treasures you might find! Saturday prices range from $.25-1.00 and Sunday afternoon pay the bargain price of $2-5 per bag (depending on the size)!
We also have a small "ongoing" Book Sale located on the main floor of the library where you will find a variety of bargain-priced items ranging from children's to adult books along with media. There are always new items to browse through for your reading pleasure.
About Donations
We now accept book sale donations 52 weeks a year! Please consider donating to us before you toss stuff in a metal bin.
Children's books, current fiction, and current non-fiction are particularly sought after but audio tapes, compact discs, and DVD's will also be accepted.
The Library is unable to accept VHS tapes, condensed books, text books, National Geographic or other magazines, or books that are mildewed or water damaged.
Receipts stating the number of items donated will be provided if requested.
It is helpful if large donations are brought in disposable bags or boxes as we don't have room to store and return plastic bins or storage containers.
